Chapter eleven

Marcel was usually able to read people fairly well, but Naomi

had a tendency to confuse her. The only real information that

Marcel had to go on was Cricket’s view of this woman, which

was more than likely distorted into a caricature of who Naomi

really was. Marcel did, however, see something there that she

liked, even though she wasn’t exactly sure what it was. The word

charisma came to mind, and she acknowledged the fact that

Naomi had it. Marcel found her attractive but felt a little uneasy

admitting that.

Carmen, who was back in the work area already, had left

shaking her head and chuckling. Marcel wasn’t sure what was

going on with Naomi at that particular moment, but she knew

which approach she wanted to take with her to help clarify

things.

“It’s nice to see you again,” Marcel said. “Can I help you find

something?”

Naomi’s smile was warm and friendly. “I saw a small table

the other night that I liked very much.” She glanced around the

showroom but apparently didn’t see what she was looking for.

“This is the first chance I’ve had to get back here since the grand

opening.”

“Business has been good,” Marcel said. “We’ve probably

sold the table you were interested in. Where was it sitting that

night?”

Naomi described the table and where it had been. “I can see

now that I should’ve gotten it then.”

“I know the table you’re talking about, and I can keep an eye

out for a similar one.”

“Would you? Thanks.”

Marcel returned to the counter and made a note on an index

card, then had Naomi write her name and phone number on the

bottom of the card.

“I don’t suppose you’re free for dinner tonight,” Naomi said

nonchalantly as she scribbled.

Marcel was caught by pleasant surprise and didn’t know what

to say at first. The remote possibility of seeing Amanda later,

in addition to having to work on the ad she hadn’t finished yet,

popped into her head.

“Tonight isn’t good for me,” Marcel said. Then with a pang

of irritation, she remembered sitting beside Naomi in the theater

last night while Cricket held Naomi’s hand in the dark.

“How about tomorrow?” Naomi asked.

Marcel liked her persistence and was beginning to think that

maybe Cricket and Carmen were right about Naomi’s interest in

her.“I’m out of town tomorrow,” Marcel said, and to soften the

rejection a little, she smiled and added, “but I might find the

table you’re looking for then. You never know.”

“May I call you?” Naomi asked. There was determination in

her eyes instead of the disappointment Marcel had expected to

find there. It was the first time they’d actually looked at each other,

and Marcel knew right away what Cricket found so attractive

about her—the spray of dark curls and the flash of perfect white

teeth that had more than likely cost her parents a bundle. Her

features were pleasant; she would never be glamorous or what

most people would call beautiful, but Marcel liked Naomi.

Cricket, Marcel thought suddenly. This is Cricket’s newest

infatuation. And she’s here asking me for a date.

“I’d like to get together with you sometime,” Naomi

continued. “I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but I find you

very interesting.
